Among other things, MM Publications also publishes classic works of English literature in a simplified format tailored to the level of students. These publications seek to support teaching and enrich language learning.
Each literary publication is accompanied by a glossary with the words students at the level are not likely to know. The glossary provides an interpretation of the English terms which are found in the text into a total of 6 other languages, which are Greek, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Polish and Turkish. The translations of the glossaries are assigned to professional translators.
I collaborated with MM Publications in the autumn of 2017 to translate such glossaries from English to Turkish. The process was more complex than one would have imagined, since it was not a sterile translation of a series of words. The text of the story had to be carefully studied since the rendition of the terms was provided based on the context of the specific paragraph in which they appeared. In short, the story and the glossaries were inextricably linked and were taken into account as a whole for translation.
