How to inspire your audience by using correct equipment

Are you organizing an event and you have interventions from remote speakers?

Well, hybrid events are an excellent opportunity to increase your attendance, lift geographic barriers and unite people from all around the world. However, you’ll want to make sure that the audience engages in a vivid way both with on-site and remote interventions.

Don’t forget! Audience engagement  is the most crucial qualitative indicator that assures the success of your event. The more people engage in discussions after the presentation of a speaker the more likely they are to buy your products, enroll in your programmes or connect with your organization and cause at the end of the event. For this you need to make sure that the equipment you have for remote presentations enhances the user experience and motivates the discussion.

A microphone can make or break your event

With the weather getting hotter and hotter, last week I took a day off from work to spend some time and relax on the beach. On that same day though, a colleague of mine with whom we share a project wanted to discuss some issues with me.

I am the kind of person who prefers not having to choose between work and entertainment, as I believe that both are crucial for a person’s wellbeing. And as job is always among my first priorities, I didn’t want to postpone the meeting, so I decided to make the call from the beach. I had headphones, unlimited mobile data, a quiet location away from the crowds, notebook and pen…. all set to make the call from here. Why not?

And indeed from my part I was fully capable to cope with the requirements of that call. A common mistake we make though when preparing a remote intervention is that we only think of the situation on our end. Yes, I have all it takes to make this speech. Everything seems fine.

However, the person on the other end of the line may not have the same feeling. In my case, my colleague had a hard day in the office and with all this fatigue he was easily distracted every time he heard a gust of wind through my earphones.

And OK, this was only an informal meeting between peers. My colleagues know me already and they also know how I work. I don’t need to prove myself to them. In the end we managed to solve the most urgent issues and this is all that matters in this case.

However, if you are a guest speaker in an event and you make a remote intervention, the context is completely different. Things get really serious here. People don’t know you and you won’t have the chance to see them again next day and elaborate further your thoughts. You only have one chance to impress them, pass your message and motivate them to act in the way you suggest! Are you going to risk it with an unsupportive platform and technical equipment, only because it seems fine on your end?
